Essex Center earns prestigious Target: BP Gold + honor.
Essex Center has been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Medical Association (AMA) for its commitment to helping improve blood pressure (BP) control rates among the patient populations it serves, earning Gold + level recognition as part of the 2022 Target: BP™ Recognition Program.
The Participation award recognizes practices that have committed to reducing the number of adult patients with uncontrolled BP.
Hypertension (high BP) is a leading risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and preventable death in the U.S. In addition, there are 116 million U.S. adults living with high BP and less than half of those people have their BP under control – making both diagnosing and effectively managing hypertension critical.
“We are proud that Essex Center has received this great award from the American Heart Association for this year’s Target BP Recognition Program,” said Kenny Rozenberg, CEO of Centers Health Care. “The commitment to save lives as we continue the journey to fight hypertension demonstrates our dedication to our residents and their families.”
Target: BP is a national collaboration between the AHA and the AMA aimed at reducing the number of Americans who suffer from heart attacks and strokes each year by urging physician practices, health systems and patients to prioritize BP control. The initiative aims to help health care organizations improve BP control rates through use of the evidence-based AMA MAP BP™ quality improvement program, and recognizes organizations committed to improving blood pressure control.
Centers Health Care is committed to improving BP control rates throughout its facilities.
4 Things to Remember to Keep This Holiday Season Stress-Free
The holidays are said to be the most wonderful time of the year, but with holiday parties, gift-giving, and planning big meals, it can also be a quite stressful time!
As we get older, many would prefer more relaxation as opposed to the hustle and bustle of the holidays. To help reach that goal, Essex Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has ways to cut down on the stress at this time of year.
Avoid the Crowds at Busy Times
If you’re retired, try to avoid the popular times to go out and shop. Skip weekends, evenings, and lunchtime. If you’re computer savvy, you can also shop online. Lots of retailers have online-only deals that extend well before and after Black Friday after shoppers got used to doing so much of their holiday shopping online during the pandemic.
Be Mindful of Your Calendar
Your free time can fill up pretty quick if you commit to work parties, family visits, neighborhood get-togethers, and more. Don’t try to do it all—it’s okay to say no!
Keep You and Yours Healthy
A wave of illness going through the house is the last thing anyone needs to add to the stress. If you haven’t already, get your annual flu shot and COVID-19 booster vaccination.
Protect Your Identity
The holiday season is a busy time for scammers too, as they take advantage of those spending more and giving as well. Be sure to shop at reputable online sites, do not make credit card transactions over public Wi-Fi, and be aware of people calling you and requesting charitable donations. You can always ask for their phone number and call them back to ensure that you are dealing with a legitimate organization.

Details on the Each of the 3 Stages of Wound Healing
It can be stressful to wait for a wound to heal, especially when it might look nasty at times and feel worse. All while wondering, when will it finally heal?
The length of time is dependent upon the size and depth of the wound. With that in mind, Essex Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing would like to familiarize you with the three stages of wound healing, so you might be able to determine how the healing of your wound is progressing.
- Inflammation
Inflammation is the body’s natural response to an injury. Blood vessels dilate to allow white blood cells, antibodies, and other nutrients to the area where the trauma occurred in order to begin the healing process and try to naturally prevent infection.
Symptoms you will recognize as part of inflammation are swelling, redness, heat, and the area being tender to the touch.
- Proliferation
The wound rebuilds itself with a material called granulation tissue during the proliferation phase of wound healing. The granulation tissue allows for new blood vessels to be formed.
Keep an eye on the color of your wound during this phase. If the new tissue is red or pink, that indicates the healing process is going well. A darker color means that there could be an infection present or your wound isn’t getting enough blood delivered to the area.
- Maturation
Depending on the severity of the wound, this stage can take up to six months or even a year after the initial injury. Collagen increases and allows the tissue to contract to complete the healing process. Scarring is caused by excessive collagen production.
Remember that even when a wound appears fully healed, that new skin is around 20 percent weaker than it initially was. And at any sign of infection, seek professional care; an infected wound will not get better on its own.

New FCC Rules Should Make It Harder for You to Get a Robocall
It’s happened to all of us: our phone rings with a local number (it might even have some of the same digits as our own number). We answer it, and it’s either a robocall, telemarketer, or a potential scammer. Regardless, it’s a call we don’t want to receive or answer.
These callers are not from your local area, but they are using a technique called spoofing that allows them to pick a fake number in your area so you’re more likely to answer the call.
This practice, however, is now illegal thanks to a new rule from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Essex Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing explains what the new rules are and what you should do if you get a call like this.
What Is the New FCC Rule?
In 2021, the FCC forced large telecommunications companies to not allow this practice by implementing a technical procedure called STIR/SHAKEN. Its purpose is to verify that the caller ID on your phone shows where the number originates from.
Robocallers then moved their operations to smaller companies there were given more time to comply. But that time has come, as all telecom companies in the U.S. must be complying with this new rule as of June 2022.
What Should You Do if You Suspect This Happens to You?
Phone companies can block these types of calls before they can even reach you, and if you do get them, there are a number of steps you can take. You can block numbers on your device or check with your phone carrier to see if there are further caller ID options you can apply to your account.
The FCC also has a web page that goes over Call Blocking Tools and Resources, which you can access by clicking the link.

Essex Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing With 6 Ways to Save Money Amid Rising Food Costs
Inflation is at levels that we haven’t seen in four decades, and food at the supermarket is no exception.
While we’re having to adjust our budgets in order to complete our weekly lists at the grocery store, there are some tried-and-true ways to save a few bucks while you’re at it in order to offset some of those higher prices.
Essex Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at six ways to save money at the supermarket to defray rising food costs.
- Look for Manager Markdowns
Manager markdowns can be found in the specialty areas of the supermarket, including the bakery, produce, and meat departments. When meat is getting close to its expiration date, it can often be half price. If you don’t cook the meat immediately, be sure to freeze it.
- Buy Generic
Most store-brand products are made from the same ingredients or (in some cases) are identical to their name-brand counterparts. Buying generic throughout the store can save you around 30% on your total bill.
- Find Out Which Day New Sales Start
At most supermarkets, this day is Wednesday. You can get your pick of the new sales before they may run out of stock, and several stores will honor last week’s sales too if you ask.
- Look for Digital Coupons to Go With Store Flyers
And remember while you clip coupons that most stores will honor coupons and lower prices from other chains.
- Sign up for Loyalty Programs
With more and more competition, stores are developing loyalty programs that may allow you to use a card to get lower prices on some items or cash rewards after spending a certain amount inside the store.
- Don’t Shop at Just One Store
One store in your area may have better prices on produce while another has cheaper prices for staples like cereal and coffee. Doing a bit of comparison shopping can go a long way when you have a weekly routine established.
